Chris O’Brien Lifehouse volunteers work side-by-side with staff to deliver uncompromising care to our patients and their families.
They work both behind the scenes, assisting staff with administrative tasks, and more directly with patients and their families. Some of these vital roles include welcoming patients, carers and visitors to Lifehouse and providing support and refreshments in our clinics.
We ask that our Volunteers commit to volunteering for a minimum of four hours each week for at least 12 months and most positions require volunteers to attend the same day each week, either in the morning or afternoon during business hours, Monday to Friday 8am – 4pm.
Becoming a Volunteer
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Chris O’Brien Lifehouse. We are pleased to provide you with this information and hope it will assist you in deciding whether to apply for a volunteer position with us.
We have a range of volunteering roles to suit people from all walks of life, including:
•Welcoming and assisting patients, carers and visitors
•Driving for our Patient Transport service
•Involvement in our Arterie and Music Therapy programs
Don’t worry if you are not sure what volunteering role would suit you, as you will be able to discuss your experience and skills with us prior to any placement.

We ask that you
•Uphold our Lifehouse Values and Organisational Charter and operate within the Lifehouse Code of Conduct
•Are dependable and consistent in fulfilling your obligations
•Are respectful of the privacy, dignity and wishes of others
•Treat any sensitive or personal information you acquire as a volunteer with complete confidentiality
•Undertake training provided to help you perform your activities more effectively
•Provide constructive feedback and suggestions so the Volunteer program can be continually improved
To be considered as a volunteer at Lifehouse you must be over 18. [If you’re under 18, you may wish to visit Youth Volunteering.]
Transport and Parking
Lifehouse is easily accessible by public transport with Newtown and Macdonaldtown stations a 20-minute walk away and bus stops on both King Street and Missenden Road. There is no Employee or Volunteer parking available within the Lifehouse complex as parking is reserved for patients. However, there are a number of reasonably priced Parking Stations nearby.
•National Police Certificate - All volunteers will be subject to a National Police Check. This is done by Lifehouse after interview. The process is confidential.
•Immunisation - Due to NSW Health Policy all volunteers must undertake immunisation prior to volunteering in the Lifehouse facility. Event volunteers not on site may not require immunisation, please discuss at interview.
•Mandatory training - There are a number of training modules all volunteers must undertake at when you first start, and some annual requirements. Most of these can be done online, which can be done in your home or at Lifehouse.
•Working with Children check - All volunteers will be asked to apply for a Working with Children check.
