What are Biomarkers?

Biomarkers are biological clues that help doctors understand how cancer behaves in each individual. They guide the choice of treatment, predict resistance, and could even detect cancer earlier than ever before.

Why is funding important?

Many of the breakthroughs at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse are made possible thanks to generous donor support. Funding helps researchers develop new tests, run clinical trials, and get discoveries from the lab into real-life treatment faster.

Tim's story

“Every single dollar you provide will absolutely help save someone’s life. That’s what research has done for me — and not just for me, for my kids, my wife, for everyone I love.”

- Tim Weale, patient at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse

"As a researcher, you can see the impact your work can have on people’s lives; to watch something that started as an idea actually making a difference is amazing.”

Dr Samuel Smith

Medical Oncology Fellow

“Biomarkers have a huge range of potential uses, including detection of cancer in people with no known history, or surveillance for patients who are at risk of recurrence."

Dr Susannah Hallal

Brain Cancer Researcher

“It’s exciting to be a part of this research that will potentially change the way we manage glioblastoma and transform outcomes for patients in the future.”
