"We want to bring the forefront of science to our patients and the forefront of research to them every day at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse. Without early career research, we can't do that."
- Associate Professor Kate Mahon

"Early Career Research is good bang for your buck. Researchers are bringing their novel ideas and new discoveries directly to patients as quickly as possible." - Doctor Tahlia Scheinberg.

A key part of inspiring hope and being at the forefront of cancer treatment is research.

The future of cancer research is at risk. By donating today, you will help secure the future of research at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.

Why is it important to invest in Early Career Researchers?

  • Value for money; Early Career Researchers utilise the expertise of their mentor to support their research into creating more effective cancer treatments.
  • Innovative thinking; Early Career Researchers are experts in the latest teachings and technology across the industry, bringing their innovative thinking to the lab and more importantly, their patients.
  • High education; Early Career Researchers are often in their mid-thirties and have completed more than a decade of study and training in medicine.
  • Improve patient outcomes; Early Career Clinician Researchers enable lab breakthroughs to be brought to patients faster as they often choose to continue treating patients while performing their research.
  • They secure the future of research by allowing each generation the opportunity to contribute to research, we are creating a supportive space to improve treatments and one day, find a cure.

Professor Lisa Horvath
Director of Research
Lisa has dedicated her life to finding solutions
to advancing cancer treatment
s for people
with prostate cancer.

Research begins when there is a problem that needs to be solved, and there is an eager mind dedicated to finding a solution.

Early Career Researchers are highly educated, highly trained medical cancer specialists who have completed their PhD in cancer research.

Opportunities for fellowships are few and far between, leaving many of our up-and-coming Early Career Researchers with no support to continue. This period is referred to as the ‘Valley of Death’ and results in many young researchers having to stop their potentially lifesaving work, due to the lack of funding

We are losing so much talent and knowledge during this ‘Valley of Death’ because we don’t have the funding to keep them.” - Prof. Lisa Horvath.

Your support will help secure the future of research and allow Early Career Researchers to leave the Valley of Death, improving the outcomes of people facing cancer.

Having received a research fellowship 20 years ago, Prof. Lisa Horvath understands the difficulty of obtaining such a rare opportunity.

She now mentors PhD students who show a keen interest in research, helping them to continue developing their research in their quest to improve the outcomes of people with cancer.

Dr. Tahlia Scheinberg
Dr. Tahlia Scheinberg is a Medical
Oncologist, Clinician Scientist, and
Early Career Researcher working under
the mentorship of Prof
. Horvath.

Early Career Researcher, Dr. Tahlia Scheinberg, has spent the last few years developing a test called the PCPro. This test will look at an individual patient’s lipid profile, which will help identify if that patient is resistant to certain prostate cancer treatments.

Just recently, Dr. Scheinberg published a scientific paper on her findings from conducting this research.

What excites me about research is the opportunities that it gives to patients.” - Dr. Tahlia Scheinberg.

If all goes well, PCPro will be available in a kit that can be used anywhere in the world. It will help identify the most effective course of treatment faster, leading to better patient outcomes.

"With this new discovery, we will hopefully be able to help men who we know have a poorer prognosis, and really improve their outcome in a meaningful way.  - Dr. Tahlia Scheinberg.

Your generous donation will support pioneering researchers like Dr. Scheinberg in their quest to improve patient outcomes, helping them develop more effective cancer treatments.

A/Prof. Kate Mahon
Director of Medical OncologyClinician Researcher & Former Early Career Researcher

“After doing my PhD I was really lucky and successful to gain a three-year grant that funded me to further my prostate cancer research that came out of my PhD” - A/Prof. Kate Mahon.

This funding allowed A/Prof. Kate Mahon to further her research and take her findings all the way through to a clinical trial, which is now open as a national clinical trial across Australia.

“That early career research funding made that happen. It would not have happened without that funding.” - A/Prof. Kate Mahon.

After years of study and conducting impressive results as an Early Career Researcher, A/Prof. Mahon is now an independent researcher, who has recently been awarded funding from the Sydney Cancer Partners Translational Partners Fellowship.

Collaborating with Dr. Dannel Yeo, they will continue their research in rare colorectal and appendiceal cancers.

"We want to bring the forefront of science to our patients and the forefront of research to them every day here. Without early career research, we can't do that." - A/Prof. Kate Mahon.

Your generous donation today will help clear the path for early career researchers who are trapped in the valley of death. You will enable them to branch out so they can become independent researchers who can make a real difference in the lives of thousands of people affected by cancer.

Your support will secure the future of research.
