In memory of John Uren

By Goldia Shum

John was a kind and generous man who unfortunately was taken from his family and friends far too soon. He lived his life to the full and passionately lived each and every day with great humour and love. John is missed terribly by his family and dear friends.

At the age of 75 John would be diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and would spend his last 3 years in and out of treatment with much of this time in chronic pain. It was through his treatment at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse that John would be introduced to the Pain Clinic team who were a significant contributor to John’s care throughout this time.

John would not have worked through the treatment he endured, nor been with us for the time that he was, without the care he received from The Pain Clinic at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse. Even through this testing time John was again thinking of others – how could he make a difference to others like him who were going through the same ordeal?

John was acutely aware of the resourcing limitations of the pain clinic and took it upon himself to provide the required funding for the recruitment of a dedicated pain nurse, his goal was always to establish this position. The new position of Pain Nurse is now in place, and every donation we receive will go to help funding this very special dedicated pain nurse going forward.
