Ultra Trail Kosciuszko Miler 2023 - My journey

Thursday 14th Dec

I did it!

Thursday 14th Dec
Ultra-Trail Kosci Miler was brutal but spectacular! We experienced crazy weather during the event to include high temperatures, strong winds and torrential lightning storms. Β The volume of water on the course dramatically added to the challenge, making it highly waterlogged, muddy, and very slippery. Β 30% of the miler field did not finish (DNF) with many struggling with blisters and hypothermia during the night. Β My feet were soaked from 50km in. Β I developed very large blisters that covered the whole forefoot of both soles, which was excruciatingly painful. Β The last 80+ became a hobble and mental pain management exercise but I managed to pull through and finish. Β UTK is by far the toughest endurance challenge I have ever done. Β A huge thanks to my partner Nicola, my brother-in-law Michael and to all who donated to such a wonder cause! Now to let me feet heal. Thank you

All packed and ready to rock n roll

Wednesday 6th Dec
Gear packed. Β No more training. Β The 9hr 30min car journey starts this evening. Β Bring on the adventure. Β A huge thanks to Nicola for all your support! Less than 2 days to the starting gun.Β

Beach to Brother 2023 race + a little bit more

Monday 23rd Oct
5 hrs 30 mins of running in the bank for this one. Β Hot conditions and messed up my nutrition. Β Bit of a slog up North Brother Mountain for the finish. Β Had enough in the tank to jog back down though to make it up to 45km. Only 7 weeks till race day!!! Β

Campus Carpark Ultra

Tuesday 12th Sep
Another 50km in the legs. Β  I organised a local fundraising event on our university campus doing 1km laps of the carpark. Β Lots of people joined me for a loop or three running, jogging and walking. Β A very boring course but awesome to see people out there supporting me and more importantly additional funds for COBLF! Β A huge thanks to Kym, Caroline and Ian for extra help on the day.Β

Serious training very much underway

Monday 14th Aug
I did my first longer training run last week, a 51km (just over 30% race distance) run west of Coff's Harbour with 2000m vert elevation up and down (37% of race elevation). Tiring work and a great reminder of just how far my run in December really is! Thank you to all those who have donated so far. I will just keep putting 'one foot in front of the other'.

3 hour training session

Friday 21st Jul
1/6 of the race distance and 1/7 of the race elevation today... I think I am going to have to find a bigger set of hills to do longer training on!

Running 100 miles over Mount Kosciuszko

Monday 19th Jun
On 8th December 2023 I will be competing in UltraTrail Kosci Miler running a gruelling 167.5km (actually 104 miles) with +5173 of vertical elevation. This will be my first (and perhaps only) attempt at a 'Miler' ultramarathon while raising funds for Chris O'Brien Lifehouse (COBLH) an amazing not-for-profit cancer hospital. COBLH's choir joined us at our opening ceremony for our national ASMIRT conference this year. Please consider donating and follow me on my journey over the highest peak in Australia!
