Katie, our sarcoma specialist nurse, brings extensive experience to her role. Originally from Glasgow, she began her career in haematology oncology, working in a bone marrow transplant unit in London.
After moving to Sydney nine years ago, Katie joined Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, working in the Day Therapy Unit, and administering chemotherapy. Her passion for working with younger patients facing complex treatments inspired her to take on the role of sarcoma nurse.
“Throughout my career, I’ve seen how important specialist nurses are,” Katie reflects. “They become a consistent point of contact for patients and families, making it easier to navigate care and access the right information.”
As the sarcoma nurse, Katie supports patients with rare and complex cancers. Sarcoma treatment often involves a combination of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. With 80 different subtypes of sarcoma, no two treatments are exactly alike. Katie works closely with oncologists, radiologists, and surgeons to ensure the care is well-coordinated and tailored to each individual.
“Many of my patients are adolescents or young adults,” Katie explains. “Their needs go beyond treatment—they’re trying to balance study, work, and friendships while dealing with cancer. I provide clarity, offer reassurance, and handle practical challenges so they don’t feel overwhelmed.”
Katie also follows up with patients for several years after treatment to monitor their well-being and help them adjust back into daily life. “It’s really rewarding to see people return to school, work, or start families. Being able to support them through these moments is incredibly meaningful.”
You can help ensure patients have a specialist nurse to turn to, always.
